Can my 2-year-old go to nursery? For many parents, this is an important question when their child begins showing curiosity, independence, and interest in interacting with others. While traditional nursery programmes may often begin around the age of three, many preschools and early learning centres welcome two-year-olds through playgroup, pre-nursery, toddler programmes, or daycare. At this stage, learning is primarily play-based and focuses on social interaction, communication, exploration, movement, and developing early independence.
Before enrolling your two-year-old, parents should consider the child’s developmental readiness and individual needs. Can the child communicate basic needs and follow simple instructions? Is the child beginning or already comfortable with the potty-training process? How does the child respond to separation from parents or familiar caregivers? Some children may adjust quickly, while others may need a gradual transition through shorter hours or part-time attendance. A nurturing early learning environment can help children develop social skills, build confidence, learn to share and interact with others, and gradually become more independent. The right time to start preschool is not determined by age alone—it also depends on the child’s readiness and the type of programme that best supports their development.
